Strutts Community Project Progress

It is the time of year when we hold the AGM of our charity, the Guardians of Strutts, that owns the building and to review our progress. I am pleased to report that room bookings at the Centre have again increased and we have achieved a financial surplus which will all be reinvested into the Project. Most of our expenditure to date has been for essential repairs to make the building weather proof and is hidden from view. This coming year we will make efforts to visibly improve facilities and work on the interior of the building. At our current rate of funding it will take us 100 years to fully restore the building with our own earnings, but we hope to shorten this by applying for grant aid. Much however can be done by volunteer effort, so if anyone would like to help with the redecoration please contact me at Strutts.

We have already raised £7,000 in generous donations from local groups and individuals specifically for a passenger lift which will literally take the Centre to a new level! It will enable people with mobility issues to access the first floor where the largest and best rooms are situated. There are a number of technical issues to be resolved in fitting a modern lift sympathetically in a Grade II listed building, but we have now obtained all the necessary permissions and are seeking quotations for the work. All we need to do now is to find the rest of the estimated £80,000 that it will cost! We will apply for grants for the lift, but we will also use some funding from our trading surplus, which will govern the timescales of the installation.

Strutts is run entirely by volunteers and provides community facilities at no cost to the ratepayers. Strutts is a successful example of what can be achieved when local authorities transfer assets to voluntary community groups. However, it is crucial for good people to stand up and volunteer to take the initiative for the benefit of their own community.

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all our volunteers for their efforts over the last 12 months together with my thanks to our users, without whom none of this would be possible. If you would like to make a difference and help in any way with the Strutts Community Project please contact me, Nick McLeod, at Strutts tel: 01773 599993.
